The Psychoanalytic Prism

P. Sakellaropoulos

More specifically, in regard to the treatment field, the meaning of "psychoanalytical prism" requires the therapists’ firm belief that psychological unconscious mechanisms are indeed those that act in all areas of the presenting symptoms and are those, which if amended by appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions, will bring about the expected results. Within this context, the emotional involvement of the therapist is necessary and acts positively, especially in cases of psychosis, where the mechanisms of projective identification and empathy are recognized as particularly important, as I will mention afterwards. The psychoanalytic prism presupposes a faith, which is the result of appropriate experiences, in the existence and operation of the unconscious and the possibility of communication of the unconscious with that of the patient. Only then can the therapist seek a reason, a motive behind the conduct disorder and a symbolism in each symptom: elements that will help him to adjust his own manipulations.

“By the term “psychoanalytical prism”, what is meant is the way the therapist “sees” and understands the treatment material and the care he shows for his patient. It is his "tool" when working with the patient and analyzing everyday life. The “psychoanalytical prism” refers to a multitude of functions concerning: the psychodynamic interview and the work done within groups, the psychotherapeutic work with families, even liaison psychiatry. Moreover, it concerns the work of teachers or other social groups that work within the unit and the treatment of aggression manifested within the framework of the interdisciplinary team. [...] That is, the “psychoanalytical prism” is the way one sees all the issues or areas of his professional life. It is ultimately the angle from which the therapist will see, will regulate, as far as possible, his deeper unconscious attitude, his resistance to deprivations and will give as far as possible an adapted response to external reality.”[...]
